Cigar Sense : What Is It, What’s New and Why You Need to Try It

Cigar Sense was created to serve discerning cigar lovers in their quest for new cigars to try and love. Here is an update on what it is, what’s new and why you need try it too.

You are the one who decides what your priorities are when choosing a new cigar to try. Our members are keen in making their own independent judgement and their purchases are less influenced by :
– best-sellers : the best cigars for you might not be the object of most noise or ads
– single cigar reviewers : the top cigars for one reviewer might not reflect your own personal taste
– biases with respect to countries of origin and tobacco seeds – every good blend is greater than the sum of the leaves that compose it
– biases with respect to brands – the wider the choice, the better it is for the consumer. The flavor profile of a cigar may be surprisingly similar to those of cigars produced in a different country, with a different blend, by a different factory, for a different brand. It turns out it are nuances in the organoleptic characteristics that are important.

Our cigar recommendation engine allows our members to rank their top cigars based on traditional criteria (nicotine strength, gauge, price range, wrapper type) but, most importantly, based on how these criteria and the cigar flavor profile match their unique preferences.

Up to today, Cigar Sense analyzed cigars from over 200 companies in 13 producing countries, representing over 1600 brands. If a cigar is not in our database yet, members’ requests are prioritized, procured, analyzed and added.

Member satisfaction is a key driver for our analytical approach and for our recommendations to members. Since launch in 2015, we have routinely achieved 90%+ satisfaction from members on personalized matching of cigars to their profiles.

The members who successfully use all our features talk (or want to learn) the cigar tasting language, which necessarily includes a range of aromas descriptors, as well as of tastes along with palate perceptions.

Rather than spending their leisure time on simply smoking any cigar, they devote it to enrich their experience focusing on the tasting of the best cigars for them. They are aware of their consumer power and know that saving money is not just about looking for deals on quantities, but rather about making educated purchases. Indeed, it’s much more about the quality of the time spent enjoying the cigar, as opposed to the quantity of frustrating activities (searches, trial and errors, waste of cigars) that prevent us from using our precious time to actually enjoy the cigars that are great for us.

While you don’t need to be an expert in cigar tasting to benefit from Cigar Sense, you may become one. Members get started with a very simple way to obtain top personalized recommendations in 3 steps, which include the identification of cigars they know they liked.

We recently rolled out this very simple approach also in a free version. Try it here.

Members can continue using the “easy” method if they feel more comfortable with it, but once they reach a greater self-awareness, they will typically switch to play with the intensities of aromas and tastes wheels and fine-tune their profiles manually. This level of precision and the members’ interactions with the service enable us to zero in on their sweet spot.

When, in 2014, we started our consumer discovery journey, we did it through a survey. It was not a scientific method, but we considered the respondents population as big enough for us to listen and test features accordingly.  One of the key take-aways from the survey was the extremely high percentage of respondents who consider flavor as the most important criterion for choosing and enjoying a cigar : 86.6%.

Flavors are a key, but not the only one based on which the cigar profiles in our database are matched with the individual members profiles. Over 150 parameters are used to describe every cigar profile in our database.

We developed a set of standards to guide our panelists through the very detailed analysis process. Norms for descriptive sensory analysis are applied. Our analysts are trained to best calibrate their results and eliminate as many biases as possible.

We are committed to preserve objectivity, integrity and independence in the creation and dissemination of our analyses. Both our tests and the consolidation of their outcomes are conducted in “blind” mode. The latter is to avoid that the test results are biased by a good relationship with the supply chain.

Based on the above, more and more actors in the industry consider the Cigar Sense approach as cutting-edge and unparalleled.

If you like our philosophy, give us a try, and please let us know how it works for you!
